Great Danes

The gentle giants we know today as the Great Dane started out as a fighter and hunter, and historically is deatiled in several ancient battle scenes.”

The mightly and powerful Great Dane was not always the ‘gentle giant’ that it is often depicted and described as today. In fact, it was a very aggressive fighter and hunter that was terribly feared because of its harsh temperament and combative nature. Fortunately, through excellent breeding programmes and dedicated fanciers, the breed has transformed over the years into a friendly and loving working dog that’s suitable for families around the world.

Reports indicate that a dog resembling the Great Dane might have existed over 2000 years ago. It is believed that dogs similar to the Great Dane first belonged to one of the tribes of Asia called the Assyrians. The Assyrians used this ancient breed for hunting wild boar and other large animals. Then Great Dane’s expert hunting skills allowed them to capture and kill these wild animals.

Although the Great Dane was originally bred for hunting and fighting, it was mainly kept as showpiece for Europe’s ruling class. The breed was valued for its tremendous build, power, boldness and endurance. Today, it still possesses many of the these same qualities. Some other accounts indicate that the Great Dane may have originated from a Mastiff-like dog that was present in England during the 1500s. The Greeks, Romans and Persians also kept these Mastiff-like dogs. Like those of many other breeds, the Great Dane’s origin is not entirely clear. There is no formal documentation that can definitively state its origins and development.

Rottweiler

The Origin of the Rottweiler is not a documented record. Actual history and reasonable supposition indicate that the Rottweiler is descended from one of the drover dogs indigenous to ancient Rome. This drover dog has been described by various accredited sources to have been of the Mastiff type, with great intelligence, rugged, dependable, willing to work and with a strong guarding instinct. The ancient Romans used three different kinds of sheep or cattle dogs, viz, the Moloses, the wolf-like sheepdog and the short haired herding dog; the latter is the ancestor of the Rottweiler and was almost identical in appearance to the Rottweiler of today.
The butchers and cattle dealers, who in increasing numbers settled in Rottweil, found the Roman herding dog ideal for their purpose. In this way a trade in purposely bred working dogs began in Rottweil and it followed that this sideline interested the cattle dealers in particular.

In honor of the good qualities of the breed the dogs that came from Rottweil were called Rottweilers. Later on this name was used to denote descendants of the Roman herding dog in Southern Germany generally, and the breed has been called Rottweiler ever since.

Through out history the Pit bulls history is fuzzy but if you dig deep enough you will find deep roots to this wonderful breed.
In ancient times the Bull dog was bred to Bait Bulls or tease them to exercise to tenderize the meat before slaughter. They were bred to grip the nose of the bull , instead of the bite slash of hind quarters like herding dogs, to make the bull run charge and buck. Queen Elizabeth 1st loved the fights between dog and Bull. Ancient bulldogs were banned form commoners because of their strength and aggression, so the commoners began cross breeding the bull dogs also know as MASTIFFS or Bull Mastiffs to smaller dogs called Terriers. The Greek Gods held Mastiffs as Great fighters and gave them the name Pugnace Britannicii. These dogs were used in Battles and during Romen Times used to fight the Gladiators in the Colosseum.
They were fist noted as being called Bulldogs in 1632 in a letter written by San Sebastian of Spain to a Mr. P. Eaton of Wellingham the letter spoke thus: Please bring me a good Mastire dog some barrels of Liquor and I beg of you please bring me some good Bulldoggs!
Over time and travel the Bull dog spread across the world. The breed adapted to the new cultures and life styles and new branch breeds were formed. Bull Terriers

The 19th century dog breeder who developed the White Bull Terrier wanted to create a "better fighting dog", but for the most part, his creation was a flop as a fighter. Instead, the breed's shining white coat earned it the admiration of the gentry of the day and the White Bull Terrier became a fashionable pet. Later, a colored variety of Bull Terrier was developed. This Colored Bull Terrier should not be confused with the Stafford shires or the Pit Bull, for he is every inch a Bull Terrier! Today, White and Colored Bull Terriers are bred for the show ring and the "living room couch." The comedian of the Bull and Terrier family, the Bull Terrier is quite the unique in appearance. No other breed of dog has the exotic, "Roman Nose" profile or the tiny triangular eyes of the Bull Terrier. The White Bull Terrier is ideally all white as the body, but sometimes has colored head marks. The Colored Bull Terrier comes in several colors, with red, brindle, black-brindle, or tri color being the most common. His average weight is 45 to 55 lbs, but may vary considerably. Bull Terrier's ears are never cropped and most stand up naturally, although an occasional Bull Terrier will have one or both ears flopping, primarily due to immaturity or injury. Bull Terriers are of English origin.

The modern bull terrier is believed to be created with the now extinct English White Terrier, the Bulldog, the Dalmatian, several terrier crosses, and some believe the Spanish Pointer, Greyhound, and Foxhound. There is even some evidence to suggest that the Borzoi and Collie were used to help elongate the head.

Boxers

Boxers come in many shades of colors as you can see here and are some of the best dogs to own!

The history of the Boxer as a unique breed begins late in the last century in the area of Munich, Germany. The Germans did not begin to breed dogs seriously and scientifically until that time, although various types of dogs had existed in Germany---as in England and the Continent---from time immemorial. According to Denlinger, "As far back as the time of the ancient Assyrians, more than 2000 B.C., a strain of dogs with powerful build, heavy head and great courage was bred and used in war. Centuries later the name of Molossian was given to dogs of this type, named from the city of Molossis in Epirus, in what is today Albania." These dogs spread across the continent and became the ancestors to the German Bullenbeisser. In England, selective breeding produced a taller, stronger dog than the original Molossis and this formed the foundation of the modern Mastiff. Later, the English crossed their Mastiff with fast running hounds to produce the Englische Dogge, or Great Dane, the German national dog. However, the Germans continued to use the Bullenbeisser as a hunting dog.
